Lillian Fong Hoon
(B. Suva, Fiji – 1985)
Lives and works in Vancouver, BC
Born in Suva, Fiji, Lillian immigrated to Canada with her family at a young age. As a Pacific Islander living on the unceded territories of the Sḵwx̱wú7mesh, Stó:lō and Səl̓ílwətaʔ/Selilwitulh and xwməθkwəy̓əm peoples, Lillian has been exploring modes of expressing and owning her identity through image making.
Having spent her formative years growing up in a suburban environment, she often felt out of place and in a state of limbo. Lillian took to writing poetry and taking photographs as a way of exploring these perceptions.
Today, Lillian’s work focuses on the environment as subject; how one’s sense of self and place is affected by their surroundings. Utilizing a keen eye for the interplay of colour and texture within everyday scenes, Lillian aims to invite the viewer to generate their own narrative.
